The Deadline for the  MEXT Scholarship 2025 Embassy Recommendation is different for each embassy. Applicants have to submit their  MEXT Embassy Recommendation Scholarship application with all the documents to the Japanese Embassy in their country. MEXT Scholarship For 2024 (Fully Funded) Application Process

Recruitment for those arriving in Japan next October is made between December of the previous year and the following February. The first screening is conducted between January and February by the Japanese embassies or consulates general.

The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program offers seven types of scholarships for students, including research, teacher training, undergraduate, Japanese studies, college of technology, specialized training college, and Young Leaders Program students. Students can apply through embassy or university recommendations.

Those who wish to study abroad are required to apply in one of two ways: embassy recommendation or university recommendation. Please see the application selection process for details.

With regard to application qualifications and procedures, in addition to the actual contents, there are also cases when detailed requirements are established. Because of this, be sure to confirm the latest edition of the application guidelines. If the application qualifications differ from the application guidelines, the contents of the guidelines should be followed.

Research studentsYou must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates). Or you must have completed 16 years of schooling.
Teacher training studentsYou must be under 35 years of age and a graduate of a college or teacher training college. You must have at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary or teacher training college in your country. (Please note that college and university teachers currently in active service are not considered for this scholarship).
Undergraduate studentsYou must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates).
Japanese studies studentsYou must be from 18 to 30 years old. You must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools which major in Japanese language or Japanese culture in a university outside Japan at the time when they come to Japan and must be enrolled in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries.
College of technology studentsYou must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed school education comparable to a high school (a minimum of 11 years beginning in primary school) education (includes prospective graduates).
Specialized training college studentsYou must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed school education comparable to a Japanese high school (includes prospective graduates).
Young Leaders Program (YLP) studentsYou must be under 40 years of age (in principle), and university or college graduates who have practical work experience, young public administrators, etc. who are expected to play active role in Asia and other countries.

As the application process and specific schedule differ according to the country of your nationality, please inquire the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country for details. DO NOT send any application documents directly to MEXT in Japan.

Documents for Application – Embassy Recommendation

Applicants MUST read through the Application Guidelines below and follow the instructions. Application Forms along with a Certificate of Health, and Recommendation Letter should be submitted to the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country. These documents can be printed and filled out by hand, typed out, or filled out with software applications and printed out.

MEXT Scholarship 2025 Application Process:

  • Students have to apply through the Japanese embassies or consulate in their home countries. You can find your embassy or consulate, Here.
  • Find and visit the official website of your country’s Japanese Embassy. Every embassy has its own application process, make sure to follow that according to your country’s embassy.
  • On official website of your country’s Japanese Embassy, you will find the  MEXT scholarship application form; download it and fill it out.
  • Submit your documents to the Japanese diplomatic mission (Japanese Embassy) in your country.
  • After the first step of the selection process, only the shortlisted students will be contacted for the  MEXT research scholarship Japanese exam and interview.
  • The shortlisted students will need to send a request to their desired Japanese university for an acceptance letter.
  • After receiving the acceptance letter, the student shall proceed with documents to confirm the scholarship.
  • Applications submitted directly to the MEXT will be rejected.
